First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 사오〮납다〮 (Yale: sàwónàp-tá).

Beyond Middle Korean, related to northern Gyeongsang 사모랍다 (samorapda, to be brutish, to be malicious), attested since the eighteenth century, and to southern Gyeongsang and Jeolla 상그랍다 (sanggeurapda, to be difficult, to be dangerous).
