Korean

Etymology

First attested in the Seokbo sangjeol (釋譜詳節 / 석보상절), 1447, as Middle Korean 아ᄅᆞᆷ〮답다〮 (Yale: àlóm-tàptá), perhaps from 아ᄅᆞᆷ〮 (Yale: àlóm, “privateness; non-publicness”) + 답다〮 (Yale: tàptá, “to be as”, adjective-deriving suffix). The phonological match is exact, but the semantics are problematic. Other Middle Korean-based etymologies have been proposed but are unlikely due to Middle Korean pitch accent mismatches.[1] Beyond Middle Korean, it is usually connected to Old Korean 阿冬音 (*atolum, beauty?), a seventh-century hapax legomenon.

Cognate with 아리땁다 (arittapda). Compare 예쁘다 (yeppeuda), 어여쁘다 (eoyeoppeuda).
