Usage notes
Outside of children's usage, this term is traditionally used as a 지칭(jiching), meaning that, it is only used to refer to one's mother, not to address them directly. As an adult, the traditional 호칭(hoching) to address one's mother directly is 어머니(eomeoni).[1][2]
