First attested in the Hyang'yak gugeupbang (鄕藥救急方 / 향약구급방), 1250, as Late Old Korean 与老 (Yale: *yelwo).

In the Hangul script, first attested in the Gugeupganibang eonhae (救急簡易方諺解 / 구급간이방언해), 1489, as Middle Korean  (Yale: yel).

Originally meant "gallbladder", not anything spiritual.
