First attested in the Bullyu dugongbu si eonhae (分類杜工部詩諺解 / 분류두공부시언해), 1481, as Middle Korean 올ᄒᆡ〮 (Yale: wòlhóy), equivalent to 옳 (Yale: wòlh, “this year”) + ᄋᆡ〮 (Yale: -óy, locative particle mistakenly reanalyzed as part of the noun).

The original word survives as modern 올 (ol). Etymologically unrelated to 오다 (oda, “to come”) and 해 (hae, “year”), but sometimes mistakenly analyzed by folk etymology as such.
