First attested in the Bullyu dugongbu si eonhae (分類杜工部詩諺解 / 분류두공부시언해), 1481, as Middle Korean 올ᄒᆡ〮 (Yale: wòlhóy), equivalent to (Yale: wòlh, “this year”) + ᄋᆡ〮 (Yale: -óy, locative particle mistakenly reanalyzed as part of the noun).

The original word survives as modern (ol). Etymologically unrelated to 오다 (oda, “to come”) and (hae, “year”), but sometimes mistakenly analyzed by folk etymology as such.
