First attested in the Yongbi eocheon'ga (龍飛御天歌 / 용비어천가), 1447, as Middle Korean 옳다 (Yale: wolhta). Compared with Mongolian ортой (ortoj), ᠣᠷᠤᠲᠠᠢ (orutai, “right, true”), Manchu ᡠᡵᡠ (uru, “truth, true”), Nivkh урдь (urd̦, “to be good”), Tamil உள் (uḷ, “to be, to have”) > உள்ள (uḷḷa, “real, true”) by Gang (2010). The h in the stem may be from 하— (ha-, “to do”), akin to 많— (man-, “many”).
