Korean
Etymology
Of native Korean origin. While apparently unattested in Middle Korean, the Standard Korean verb 파닥이다 (padagida, “to flap, to flutter”) and ideophones 파닥 (padak, “flappingly, flutteringly”) and 파드닥 (padeudak, “id.”) are transparently derived forms. The Yukjin word is thus believed to preserve an unattested Middle Korean verb, which would be an irregularly pitched *ᄑᆞᆮ〮다〮 (*phóttá) assuming that the Yukjin high pitch is faithful to the original pitch.
