Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *-isālo-, composed of the aorist suffix *-is-ā- and the suffix *-lós. Cognate with Old Church Slavonic -лъ (-lŭ), used in the formation of the periphrastic Slavic perfect, e.g. неслъ (neslŭ), билъ (bilŭ, beaten).
