Tagalog
Etymology
Borrowed from Spanish -ación.
Pronunciation
Suffix
-asyón (noun-forming suffix, Baybayin spelling ◌ᜐ᜔ᜌᜓᜈ᜔)
- Used in forming a noun to represent a property corresponding to a verb, usually Spanish-derived. Also used to replace English -ation in words adapted directly to Tagalog upon borrowing: -ation
- Synonym: pag-
Usage notes
- Almost all Tagalog words with the ending are borrowed from Spanish, with some being pseudo-Hispanic adaptations of English borrowings ending with -ation to match existing Spanish loanwords with that suffix (e.g. populasyón, from population; polusyón from pollution). Compare the usage of Indonesian -asi (from Dutch -atie) to replace -ation in some English borrowings in a similar vein to harmonize with existing Dutch borrowings ending with that suffix.
- Rarely used to form authentic words (compared to the synonymous native equivalent pag-), except for surface analysis of existing words (e.g. modernisasyon), which can be analyzed as modernisa + -asyon, or as replacement of English -ation as explained above.
- Its use in adapting -ation in English loanwords has been proscribed by some linguists, most notably Virgilio S. Almario during his tenure in the Commission of the Philippine Language, as an example of siyokoy, preferring using an equivalent with the prefix pag- or borrowing and respelling the equivalent Spanish of the English.
