Usage notes

In the forms -ajain, -äjäin, the suffix has often reduced to simply -ain, -äin. It is distinguished from -in in those cases by whether the preceding -a- or -ä- is present or not; elin is -in, but eläin is -jain. Note however that -in may also be preceded by an -a- or -ä- in case of verbs with stems that end in a long -aa- or -ää-.
