Production
- This one-handed ASL sign is produced as follows:
- Posture the dominant hand in the “1” handshape at the chin, dominant palm facing back.
- Move the hand forward and extend the wrist so the index finger tilts forward.
- Posture the dominant hand in the “1” handshape several inches from the chin, dominant palm facing up.
Verb
If you can, please upload a png or jpg image showing the production of this sign. (ASL gloss: TELL)
- to tell
Inflection
- This is a directional sign. The direction the index finger points in the final posture indicates the indirect object, i.e. the person being told.
- If the indirect object is the first person, the index finger moves from the chin to the sternum.
- The unrealized inceptive form of this sign has the meaning “just about to tell”. This form is produced by dropping the jaw, rotating the torso, and posturing both hands in front of the chest, then by inhaling while moving the hands in an arc to the initial posture of the base sign (i.e., Posture the dominant hand in the “1” handshape at the chin, dominant palm facing back.) and then holding the breath by closing the glottis. Additionally, the signer will gaze toward the indirect object (the person being told).
