Vietnamese
Etymology
Sino-Vietnamese word from 阿彌陀, from Literary Chinese 阿彌陀. While the onset consonant of Middle Chinese 彌 (miᴇ) was /m/, it was palatalized before a following high vowel, and the palatalized /mj/ was fortited into what is now spelt as d. A similar fortition occurred for the palatalized /pj/ which was fortited as a t(h) sound. A Mi Đà seems to be a hypercorrected or etymologically motivated form which attempts to render the original /m/. Compare Japanese 阿弥陀 (Amida) and Korean 아미타 (Amita).

Usage notes
- As a regular Sino-Vietnamese word, the unhyphenated spelling is expected as hyphenated spellings are outdated for all native and Sino-Vietnamese words. The hyphenated spelling is also used rather inconsistently even in Buddhist sources.
