Etymology

The city was originally named Abaeté, ultimately from Old Tupi abaeté (honorable man). In 1943, the name was changed by the adition of tyba to avoid confusion with a homonymous city, thus creating the new compound abaetetyba (honorable men gathering).[1][2]
