From Middle High German aptīe, abbeteie, from Old High German abbateia (manuscript 12th c.), from Proto-West Germanic *abbadejā (“abbey”). Analysable as Abt + -ei. The early ei-spellings are unusual, but perhaps caused by the hiatus; regular ī-forms are found alongside in Middle High German.
