Albanian
Etymology
Derived from Ancient Greek Ἀφροδίτη (Aphrodítē). Alternatively, perhaps an indefinite form of Afërdita (“the daybreak, the dawn”), compound of afër (“nearby, close”) and ditë (“day”), referring to the planet Venus or the morning star (which in any case may have influenced the spelling) (compare Bardhyl).[1] According to W. W. Tarn, Ancient Greek Ἀφροδίτη (Aphrodítē) may even be a loan from a neighboring language;[2] see that entry for more.
Proper noun
Afërditë f (definite Afërdita)
- (astronomy) Venus
- deity in Albanian mythology (Albanian variant of Aphrodite, Greek mythology and Roman goddess Venus)
