Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /ˈanɡəˌʃtɛltɐ/
- Hyphenation: An‧ge‧stell‧ter
Etymology 1
From angestellt.
Noun
Angestellter m (adjectival, definite nominative der Angestellte, genitive (des) Angestellten, plural Angestellte, definite plural die Angestellten, feminine Angestellte)
- employee, worker, clerk, servant, staffer, staff member (male or of unspecified gender)
Usage notes
- Formerly, a distinction was made between Arbeiter (“worker”) and Angestellter, with the latter being a salaried professional or white-collar worker. Today, the word usually includes all (permanent) employees. It is still precisely distinguished from Beamter, however.
- Since the late 20th century, many companies replaced the word in their internal parlance with Mitarbeiter, which was thought to sound more like flat organization. More recently, some companies have been reintroducing Angestellter, because this word is more readily adaptable to gender-neutral language.
