Coined by the German geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner (1749–1817) from Ancient Greek ᾰ̓πᾰ́τη (apátē, “deceit, fraud”) as it is often mistaken for other minerals (possibly from Pre-Greek) + -it (suffix forming nouns denoting minerals or rocks).
