Kotus type 38 (nainen) | NSK type 63 (hevonen) |
---|
Nominals ending with ⟨-nen⟩, such as adjectives formed with the suffixes -inen and -lainen, nouns formed using the suffix -nen and action nouns (nouns derived from verbs with -minen); all can be traced back to the suffix -(i)nen.
No consonant gradation.
Inflectional stem replaces ⟨-nen⟩ with ⟨-se-⟩. Final ⟨-e-⟩ of stem is dropped before the plural marker ⟨-i-⟩, and the partitive singular and genitive plural suffixes ⟨-ta⟩/⟨-tä⟩ and ⟨-ten⟩/⟨-en⟩.
Unusually, type 38 nominals also have special combining forms used in compounds whenever they are not the final component. The final ⟨-nen⟩ is replaced with ⟨-s-⟩. See -inen for more information.
Many place names belonging to this class (e.g. Ikaalinen) have a rather idiosyncratic inflection, in which singular and plural forms are mixed. Most forms are only in the plural, while the nominative and accusative forms are only in the singular. Partitive and translative forms may be either; the singular is more common for the former and the plural for the latter.
