Sindarin
Etymology
Modified from two words, Gwala and Ban, in Tolkien’s earlier conception of the language (‘Gnomish’). Diegetically explained as inherited from Primitive Elvish *Bala, with the final -n perhaps added by analogy from inflected or derived forms, and so cognate to Quenya Vala.
Tolkien vacillated on the question of whether this word was to exist at all or was better abandoned in favor of Rodon.
Proper Noun
Balan • wj#5# (plural Belain)
- Vala (divine power)
- Synonym: Rodon
