Modified from amrost (‘sunrise’) in Tolkien’s earlier conceptions of the language (‘Gnomish’ and later early ‘Noldorin’), from still earlier ambros, ambrost. Diegetically explained as am (“up”) + rhûn (“east”, literally “rising”), and so cognate or formed in parallel to Quenya Ambaróna (“Fangorn Forest”, literally “Eastern (Land)”) and ambarónë (“dawn”).
