Etymology
Attested since the end of the 18th century and originally probably from the Netherlands. While most likely a diminutive, it is unknown which given name Atze has developed out of; it likely emerged in different dialects independently. Candidates include Andreas, Artur and Matthias (whence Matze). The similar sounding diminutive Azo developed from Aldelbertus with Azzo being attested since 1259 in the Lake Constance region.
Alternatively, a back-formation from atzen.
