Unknown. Cognate with Livvi Anus. Some old attestations suggest may have originally been closer to *Agnis or *Agnus: Agnismaa (1587), Agnesma (1612), Augnisma (1657), but also compare Auniszmaa (1590). Possibly from a substrate or a lost given name, or reduced from earlier *alanus (something like “lowland”).
