In 803, the Dengyō Daishi received the mandate from the Emperor and left for China to study religion there. When he returned, he brought with him the many theories of the Tiantai/Tendai sect, and he went on to preach its doctrine in Japan, in the process establishing one of the two most influential sects during the Heian period (794-1186). Researchers have dubbed them the “two sects of Heian,” and they were Tendai and Shingon.
