Derived from a compound of Middle Dutch bern (“source, spring”) and hees (“brushwood”). Originally the name of a hamlet. The hamlet was gifted to the monks of the abbey of Bern near Zaltbommel in 1196. An abbey of the same name would later be founded in Heeswijk-Dinther in 1857.
