First attested as westerblocweere in 1289. Derived from a contracted compound of Middle Dutch bloc (“piece of farmland enclosed by a ditch or fence”) and weer (“enclosed piece of land located between two ditches”). The settlement was formerly known as Westerblokker. After the village was incorporated into Hoorn, it became known simply as Blokker.
