First attested as burkelo in 1190. Compound of Proto-Germanic *burgôn- (“a kind of tree or forest”) and lo (“light forest”). The precise interpretation of *burgôn- is a matter of some debate. The element is most likely related to *birkô- (“birch, Betula sp.”). Compare Borgele, Borkel en Schaft, Bulkenaar, Schipborg and Westerbork.
