First attested as burkelo in 1190. Compound of Proto-Germanic *burgôn- (a kind of tree or forest) and lo (light forest). The precise interpretation of *burgôn- is a matter of some debate. The element is most likely related to *birkô- (birch, Betula sp.). Compare Borgele, Borkel en Schaft, Bulkenaar, Schipborg and Westerbork.
