First attested as in brakkinghem in the late 10th century. Originally a compound of Old Dutch Brakko (a personal name) suffixed with the collectivising suffix -ing- and heem (home, settlement). The second element was gradually replaced with kamp (enclosed piece of land). Compare Denekamp, Greffelkamp, Gölenkamp, Haftenkamp and Höcklenkamp.
