First attested as te brescins around 1300. Etymology uncertain. A proposed derivation from Middle Dutch britse (“latticework”) does not match the oldest attestations. Potentially derived from bres (“hole, opening”) or Zealandic bres (“chunk of dune sand loosened by the sea”), here referring to a pool formed next to a destroyed levee.
