Attested as de Leeghwater aan de Kaag in 1851. Compound of buiten (outside) and the toponym Kaag. The toponym initially referred to an area outside of Kaag. The name was officially confirmed only in 1959. Before then, the settlement was usually known as De Leeghwater or Leeghwaterbuurt, a reference to a nearby pumping station named after engineer Jan Adriaanszoon Leeghwater.
