The primary classification of nouns is by the final consonant of the stem:
- Stem ending in a hard consonant.
- Stem ending in a soft consonant.
- Stem ending in a velar consonant (г, к or х).
- Stem ending in a hushing consonant (ж, ш, ч or щ).
- Stem ending in ц.
- Stem ending in a vowel, except и.
- Stem ending in и.
- The traditional "third declension", consisting of:
- Masculines and feminines with nominative in -ь, genitive in -и (the so-called "i-stems").
- Neuters with nominative in -я, genitive in -ени (the so-called "n-stems").
Further classification is by accentuation type:
- a : Accent always on the stem.
- b : Accent always on the ending, or on the final syllable of the stem when there is no ending.
- c : Accent on the stem in the singular, on the ending in the plural.
