First attested as charolois in 1460. From Middle French Charolais. The area received its name when Philip the Good of Burgundy granted it to his son Charles the Bold, who was duke of Charolais.

The typical Dutch pronunciation given below possibly derives from the Middle French pronunciation, in which oi represented something like /o̯e/, which conceivably could yield Dutch /oː/.
