Etymology

Unknown. Possible etymologies include:

  • from chory (ill) + -ów, meaning “unhealthy place” or “town of sick people”;
  • from Chorz + -ów, where Chorz is an archaic personal name, possibly a diminutive of Zachariasz;

The city developed during the industrialization and was called Königshütte (literally Royal Ironworks) by the Prussians.
