This paper points out that since the 1986 National Conference of Language Works, Hanyu Pinyin and Hanzi no longer have equal status in the Chinese writing system. Some use romanization to make a political statement, a legacy of the “Great Tongyong-Pinyin Wars” of the 2000s. Here's a useful trick: if you notice someone is using the Hanyu Pinyin system that is standard in China for their name, they are likely pan-blue (pro-KMT), and if they use Taiwan’s Tongyong Pinyin, they are probably pan-green (pro-DPP).

The thing is…Wades-Giles is totally unworkable without these special marks nobody really understands. And I don’t think ANYONE really bothered with Tongyong Pinyin. So romanization in Taiwan became completely feral and senseless. Finally in 2009 the KMT govt decided enough is enough and said we’re just gonna go to Hanyu Pinyin, used not just in China but also Singapore, Malaysia, the Diaspora, wherever Mandarin Chinese is taught. Of course, if your family always spelt your name a certain way you can keep it. But otherwise the official romanization system in Taiwan is SUPPOSED to be Hanyu Pinyin! The DPP govt has been in power for 8+ years now and they kept Hanyu Pinyin official. But they never really properly enforced it either. So if you ever come to Taiwan the romanized street signs are actually still total chaos in our year of the lort 2025.
