O termo romance foi atribuído a esse gênero por se tratar de narrativas escritas em língua vulgar, o romanço, e não no latim tradicional. A palavra romance significa "como os romanos, à modo dos romanos". Diferentemente da canção de gesta, o romance medieval é destinado à leitura e à recitação. Entre os romances do período, dois tipos se sobressaem: o romance de cavalaria e o romance sentimental.
