- The classic autists, formerly called « low functioning autists » who have very important cognitive and social impairments. They are usually in facilities or taken care of at home because those impairments make it impossible for them to be autonomous.
- The formerly called « Asperger’s » or « autistic savants ». They are people with savant syndrome (incredible abilities in at least one task/domain) who have a social impairment that can be important to moderate, but will still be recognized by non-autists as being clearly atypical (speech intonation or prosody for example).
