Kankanaey

Etymology

Clipping of nadatdat-a (flat land).

Folklore says that this is the land that Layawen (from Ankileng) migrated, and where their pig gave birth. Since Layawen struggled in bringing and returning their pig and its kids, Layawen took their family and just resided on the land. When the residents asked where are they going, they responded "nadatdat-a". Other people followed them and also resided in the area, after which the area was called "Data".
