Dutch

Etymology

First attested as in thrimnithi in 850. Etymology uncertain. Potentially a derivation from Proto-Germanic *þirmina- (terminus, extreme point) with collectivising suffix *iþja-. A proposed derivation from Proto-Germanic *þrum- (piece of land, terminus) with collectivising suffix *iþi- is impossible because of the presence of -mn- in the oldest attestations. Compare Drempt, Dreumel and Drimmelen. Formerly an independent village.

Pronunciation
