Ede
Variant spelling of Eade.
Ede (plural Edes)
Potentially attested as in uilla heoa in 838, attested with certainty as de edhe in 1216. Difficult to interpret. Proposed derivations from a hydronym Ee (derived in turn from aa (“watercourse”)), heide (“heath, heathland”), Old Dutch Edo (a personal name) and ede (“turf”) either do not match the oldest attestations or are phonologically or morphologically unsatisfactory. Compare Eede, Een and Oud-Ade.
