Etymology

First attested as elburg in 1225. Etymology uncertain. Several interprations of El- have been proposed, ranging from a personal name to a reference to the city being located on an elevated section of land to a derivation from a term related to elleboog (elbow) (impossible because of the presence of -n- in older forms of the word, see Middle Dutch elne (elbow)). A derivation from Middle Dutch *helberg (hill among low-lying terrain) is also unlikely. The use of ter elborch implies that the second element is Middle Dutch borch (castle, fortified settlement). See also Elspeet.
