From Low German and Middle Low German erpel, which is borrowed from Middle Dutch erpel (introduced by Flemish settlers in the East), probably a pet form of the Old Saxon personal name Erpo or Old High German Erpho (literally the brown one), from Proto-Germanic *erpaz (brown). The word is not part of modern standard Dutch.
