Etymology
Borrowed from Spanish Etlatongo, from a Nahuan language (equivalent to Classical Nahuatl *Etlāntōnco (literally “little place of beans”)), a partial calque from a Mixtec language (cf. Teposcolula Mixtec Yucunduchi (literally “mountain of beans”)). The diminutive suffix -tōnco was added to distinguish it from Etlān (“Etla”, another town about 55 km away).
