  • (Beuningen) First attested as in euuic around 855. From Middle Dutch , from Old Dutch ēwīc. Compound of Old Dutch ā (river, watercourse) and wic (farmstead, settlement, village), so equivalent to aa +‎ wijk with umlaut. Wijk-toponyms with an umlaut are very rare in the Dutch linguistic area, but are common in Westphalia (e.g. Dellwig, Hennewich and Kettwig). Compare Meeswijk.
