Fredrik +‎ stad, first part named after Frederick II of Denmark, the King of Denmark and Norway and Duke of Schleswig and Holstein from 1559 until his death in 1588, the city was the first in Norway to be named after a person.

Prior to 1877, the name was spelled Frederiksstad, then from 1877–1888 it was written as Fredriksstad, and finally since 1889 it has been spelled in its current form: Fredrikstad.
