From an alteration of frisbie, applied to the disk game by U.S. college students who tossed pie plates from Mrs. Frisbie's Pies, Frisbie Bakery, Bridgeport Ct., since the 1930s. From the English family name Frisby attested 1226, from the toponym attested 1086 in Frisby on the Wreak, Leicestershire, from Old Danish Frisby (Frisian village).
