Borrowed (and phonetically adapted) from Middle Low German gelach, gelōch. Pertaining to legen (to lay) and hence originally “food and drink laid on the table”. Now often associated more closely with liegen (to lie) and interpreted as “party where people lie down drunk”. Compare Dutch gelag.
