First attested as gheverich in 1271. Etymology unknown. Perhaps derived from Gallo-Roman Latin *Gabriacum, *Gaviriacum or *gabriacum (goat park). A derivation from Proto-Germanic *gabra (wetland, swamp) suffixed with *-ikja- has also been proposed.
