First attested as gheverich in 1271. Etymology unknown. Perhaps derived from Gallo-Roman Latin *Gabriacum, *Gaviriacum or *gabriacum (“goat park”). A derivation from Proto-Germanic *gabra (“wetland, swamp”) suffixed with *-ikja- has also been proposed.
