- (Gelderland) First attested as harderewich and herderewich in 1231. Etymology uncertain. A compound formed from either herder (“shepherd”) or harde (“solid, hard soil”) and wijk (“settlement, village”) is one possibility. Derivations from a shallow area near the city called Het Harde or Old Dutch Hardheri (a personal name) have also been proposed. Compare Hierden, Heerde and 't Harde.
