A compound formed from either herder (shepherd) or harde (solid, hard soil) and wijk (settlement, village) is one possibility. Derivations from a shallow area near the city called Het Harde or Old Dutch Hardheri (a personal name) have also been proposed. Compare Hierden, Heerde and 't Harde.
