From Middle High German hebamme (15th century), heveamme (13 ct.), from Old High German hevanna (midwife), later altered to Hebamme to resemble Amme (wet nurse) (amme). This development is still reflected in modern German, inasmuch as the word can either be pronounced as a compound ("Heb-Amme") or as one word ("Hebamme").
