First attested as Helenaveen in 1874. Compound of Helena (a personal name) and veen (“peat bog, marsh”). Named after Maria Helena Huberta Panis (1817-1884), wife of Johannes van de Griendt (1804-1884) who purchased and developed the land around Griendtsveen and Helenaveen.
