Dutch
Etymology
First attested as Holven in 1552. Derived from a compound of the toponym Holven (derived in turn from hol (“low-lying, swampy”) and ven (“bog, pool in a marsh or forest”)) and the toponym De Heide (derived in turn from heide (“heath, heathland”)). The village developed through the union of the Holven hamlet and new construction on De Heide, which before then had been a barren field.
